Meer dan vijfhonderd mensen in het zuiden van IJsland moeten hun huizen verlaten als gevolg van de uitbarsting van een vulkaan. De plaatselijke autoriteiten berichtten dat niemand gevaar loopt.
Een vulkaan in het gebied van de gletsjer Eyjafjallajökull, bijna 120 kilometer ten zuidoosten van Reykjavik, is vanmorgen actief geworden. De weg naar het gebied is uit voorzorg afgesloten.
Verschillende vluchten vanuit de VS moesten worden omgeleid door de uitbarsting. Ook alle binnenlandse vluchten zijn geannuleerd.
Het is voor het eerst sinds 1823 dat hier een vulkaan uitbarst.
